Union Workers Co-ops as the Basis of an Economy that Works for All
If we were to create an economy that works for everyone, what would it look like? One model is Spain's Mondragon network of hundreds of cooperatives employing 80,000 workers. In Chicago the workers at New Era Windows and Doors occupied their factory with the help of their union (UE) and turned it into a co-op when the current owner decided to shut the factory down. And in New York, the workers in the largest worker cooperative in the U.S., Cooperative Home Care Associates, brought in SEIU to help them improve standards across the sector. Unions and Workers Facing Political Repression
The very reason for workers to unionize is rooted in repression—employers using their power to enforce poverty wages, dangerous working conditions, exhausting hours, intolerable disrespect, mental abuse, and suppression of voice. We mostly experience this repression firsthand from bosses, but behind them are governments that either fail to intervene or, increasingly around the world, use authoritarian powers and paramilitary means to terrorize and incapacitate workers and their unions. Yet this abuse of power always generates resistance.

Democracy Is Power: Fighting for One Member, One Vote
The year 2021 was marked by two great victories for national union reform efforts that have been in the making for decades: the Teamsters for a Democratic Union-backed slate sweeping into national office, and Auto Workers winning the right to directly elect their national officers. Hear from two leaders of these movements on how they won the "one member, one vote" rule in the Teamsters and in the Auto Workers, and why the ability to directly elect national union leaders matters.

Educator Member Organizers: Making It Work
How can educators find time to do the work of the union? Given that the paid workyear for educators is often 10 months long, it can be logistically challenging for a union to pull members out of their regular jobs for extended periods on union business leave. This workshop will explore different models that unions can use to engage leaders and activists in longer-term internal organizing efforts using a combination of union business leave and stipends.

Not in a Union Yet? You Still Have Rights (S)
About 35 percent of strikes reported in the last 12 months were by workers not represented by any union. Surprising as it seems, these strikers have rights under the National Labor Relations Act. Three cases will be reviewed: the Milagro Tortilla Strike, United Scrap Metals, and Amazonians United safety strikes at the beginning of the pandemic. We'll review how to write an unfair labor practice charge against the employer, prepare strikers for an affidavit, and strengthen the charge with a written position statement.
